Quote Of The Day

Owsley Stanley, LSD Supplier/Grateful Dead Sound Engineer Dies

I'll admit that I had no idea who Owsley Stanley was until I came across this article in today's WSJ. What a guy! Mr. Stanley directly influenced the 1960s acid rock culture by distributing shit tons of, well, high purity acid, often times for free, at concerts with the goal of introducing a new form of consciousness. Over the course of his travels, which included the UVA School of Engineering and the Air Force, he wound up becoming the Grateful Dead's audio expert: creating their sound system, introducing live recordings and even coming up with the trademark skull and lightning-bolt logo. As described in the journal:

Mr. Stanley was the rebellious scion of an eminent Kentucky family. His grandfather, Augustus Owsley Stanley, was a U.S. senator after serving as governor. The younger Mr. Stanley was described by a former schoolmaster "almost like a brain child," but was kicked out of the Charlotte Hall Military Academy in 9th grade for "getting the whole campus intoxicated" on smuggled booze, he told a biographer of Jerry Garcia, the late guitarist for the Grateful Dead.

Owsley died last Sunday at 76 after a car accident in Queensland Australia. The whole article is here.

This is how sweet war movies start

Mediterranean Sea. Present Day.

The USS Kearsarge (pictured) and USS Ponce cleared the Suez yesterday as Washington, and the world, turn up the heat on Gaddafi. Story here. While Hollywood is definitely the least important stakeholder when it comes to the current crisis in Libya, I am hoping Tinseltown gets another shot at a Behind Enemy Lines-esque movie out of this debacle and Owen Wilson gets nowhere near the script.

Current events quiz: Sheen vs. Gaddafi

Or is Qadaffi? Or Qadhaffi? Or Gadhafi? Honestly, the dude's name is spelled differently every time I see it printed on the front page of a newspaper. That turns out to be everyday. Either way, both he and Chuck S have a way with words. The Guardian is having a little fun with the phenomenon.

Take the topical, quotable Sheen v. Gaddafi quiz. I suffered through a 6/10, which is disappointing whether you think it's impressive or terrible.

Sheen Quote Of They Day

“I’m tired of pretending like I’m not special, I’m tired of pretending like I’m not bitchin', a total fricking rock star from Mars."

Quote Of The Day?

"I am on a drug; it's called Charlie Sheen. It's not available because if you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body . . . too much?"

Life after football

e

There are so many stories about NFL heroes becoming zeroes in the football afterlife. I like to think this picture captures that. There are the tragic stories about concussions. There are obvious stories about steroids . There are a novel full of stories that make you see your childhood hero in a (only kind of) new and unfortunate light.

The image of Phase I of the Aftermath of Junior Seau's most recent foray into this disturbing trend is what you see above.

Democrats Using Reefer to Cultivate Young Voters

In what could be a great idea or a sign of desperation, Democratic strategists are deciding whether or not to push marijuana initiatives on to ballots for the 2012 elections. According to a WSJ article today, Democratic candidates in California are benefitting from a surge in enthusiasm from young voters eager to support Proposition 19, which will legalize Marijuana in certain quantities and allow local governments to regulate and tax it.

The article states that ballot measures typically do not increase turnout on a large scale, although strategists from both parties argue that certain ballot measures can activate targeted groups of voters which can impact a close election. Democrats liken the reefer measure to the 2004 ban gay marriage effort Republicans lead in Ohio and other battleground states as a way to attract the more conservative vote for President Bush.

We'll see if this makes any sort of difference. I think it sounds difficult to just slap a marijuana initiative on the ballot in any state. The states that will have an initiative on the ballot likely lean enough to the left that it won't make a difference (The Dems are munsoned right now so maybe it will). The Democrats are definitely dangling the joint in front of those young voters. What would be funny (kind of) if it backfired. There are definitely a lot of 19 year old Republicans who love weed but feel they've been around long enough where they can be a xenophobe and complain about their taxes. Full article here.

Kenny Powers Signs with Sox

The Mets were not the only team making noise with hirings and firings yesterday. The Red Sox picked up Kenny Powers off waivers from HBO. Not really, that's just Rod Beck.

But the dudes at BroBible put together an excellent look at 15 Kenny Power's moments in professional sports. Check it out here. In addition to Beck's mullet, highlights include cocaine with the Mets, blowing cash with Dykstra, teaching gym with "Sweet Lou", doing 'roids with a gross collection of MLB'ers that includes a lot of Yankees, and selling personal belongings with John Daly.

Game. Set. Match. Littoral Combat Ship.

In response to the Navy's new 380 foot toy, drug smugglers are countering with a submarine. Built in a jungle. But don't worry, it has a periscope. I mean seriously, look at this thing.

First of all, I want to know how these drug entrepreneurs plan to get this 100 foot long submarine from La Loma - in the middle of the Ecuadorian jungle (see point A on the map below) where it was built to avoid detection - to the ocean without being, well, detected.

And why are all the newscasters excited that the submarine has "air conditioning, and even a periscope." Have you heard of a submarine before?

The camo is also awesome. Are they trying to hide in a Warhol painting?

But in the end, perhaps the serious embarrassment falls on the most powerful government in the world for not being able to stop these devastatingly brilliant drug runners? Nah, I think I'll put my money on the LCS. The ALCS.
