Top 10 Pics of Mick Jagger from the World Cup

The hardest thing I have done all day was decide which one to put on the front page. While the classic Mick chicken-dance stage pose was a close second (see the whole lot here) and I also really liked the shot of Mick's friend taking a picture of his thumb Mick's thumb, I went with this gem for obvious reasons.

Is that even Hillary? And is Bill petting her? Or getting ready to slam her head into the railing? Are both the dude taking the picture and in the picture fist pumping?

...with soccer players exchanging jerseys after the game?

Let's allow the Times to crack an egg of knowledge on us

The gentlemanly ritual is believed to have begun in 1931, when France beat England for the first time. The French players were so ecstatic they asked the English players if they could have their jerseys as keepsakes. The English obliged.

It was not until 1954 that exchanges took place at a World Cup, according to FIFA.com, but one of the more memorable moments in the ritual was an exchange that did not take place.

In 1966, England defeated Argentina, 1-0, in the quarterfinals, but the play was so vicious that when England’s manager, Alf Ramsey, who had referred to Argentina’s players as animals, spotted one of his players exchanging jerseys with an Argentine, he stepped in and yanked the jersey away.

So that's basically it....pretty cool ritual if you ask me.

Anyone else remember trading patches after youth soccer games? That was the shit!

The best soccer player in the world changes so quickly, it's hard for the casual fan to keep up. So consider this post a PSA before the World Cup. Lionel Messi is now the best.

Terry/Bridge Follow-up

Following up on the John Terry/Wayne Bridge story. Not even a "dead fish" handshake here.

WSJ Dabbles in John Terry Story

Rumors have been swirling that English National Team (soccer) Captain John Terry had marital “transgressions” involving the girlfriend of former club and current national team teammate, Wayne Bridge. I am not sure how this story merits publication in the WSJ other than it loosely connects the British/Euro fascination with “football” culture to the PR and entertainment business. I just think they're looking for content juicier than healthcare and munsoned Toyotas. Anyway, not only did the journal drill Terry as a sauced adulterer, they also blew up his spot for parking in handicap spaces! There was also a noteworthy quote from a former English National team player who played in the late ‘80s (80s!), “There was always an unwritten law that you didn’t go near another player’s wife or girlfriend, and you expected the same from them.” Nice, as long as it’s OK for me, then.
