Norway to open super luxurious prison

I put this picture out front because it immediately made me recognize something was different about this prison...where are the bars? where is the razor wire? That looks more like the annex wing of some hillside library.

Anyway, here's the deal. In an effort to rehabilitate, not detain, its criminals, Norway is opening this crazy prison where each cell has a private bathroom and a flat screen TV. The prison will hold 250 or so inmates making it Norway's second largest facility. (Cook County Prison outside of Chicago holds 6800 men and women by comparison).

Other amenities include athletic fields, a gym, a library and most importantly, a full recording studio. Sweet! I'm thinking the same thing as you...Why should we have to wait until Lil Wayne gets out of jail (he's due for sentencing on gun charges at the moment) to hear a new single?

I'm definitely unaware of what prisons are really like in the U.S. and other countries (and thankful for that) but I do have to believe that this would relieve some of the stress put on prisoners and maybe allow them to actually spend time in counseling with a goal of real rehabilitation.

  1. I have a feeling that there might be a slight difference between your typical Nordic prisoner compared to the typical US prisoner. Some people deserve to sit in prison and enjoy a really shitty rest of their life.
