GE Tests Kites as a Means to Decreasing Energy Consumption on International Shipping Vessels

Granted I'm reading GE's corporate news page, but this still sounds like a great idea. GE is currently testing employing large kites to aid in the propulsion of shipping vessels to tap a natural energy source and reduce fuel needs. Basically, the kite is deployed once the ship reaches open ocean and if the winds are blowing in the right direction, it helps.

A ship’s average fuel costs can be reduced by 10 to 35 percent annually, but under optimal wind conditions up to 50 percent can be cut. On average, using the SkySails system leads to a 39 percent savings in freight costs. From www.gereports.com

This is a cool concept and goes along with the notion that every little bit helps. While they're out there developing landfill gas powered engines, they can tap this older technology to create more immediate efficiencies. I only wish Jack Donaghy from 30 Rock had pitched this idea to me.
