From the archives: What is this Russia?

TCD's baseball beat writers typically cover the Yanks and Sox. Our Mets guy quit in 2008. It's not often we talk about the Cubs - and this video isn't really about the Cubs at all anyway - but in the spirit of introducing diversified baseball coverage we give you a typical Cubs fan.

Mandatory golf equipment

This is something that I will be trying to pick up. Beers just do not stay cold in the golf bag, but now our problems are solved! I can hear C9 calling in the order now. Great production quality here too:

Bernie Carbo Double Bombshell

Who?

This dude played baseball primarily during the 1970s for several teams, including the Boston Red Sox. Recently, he admitted two nefarious acts in two separate ESPN interviews.

Last weekend on Outside the Lines Carbo admitted trying to hire someone to attack ex-St. Louis Cardinals teammate Keith Hernandez after Hernandez testified in 1985 that Carbo introduced him to cocaine.

According to Carbo: "I knew some people, and I had $2,000, and I asked them to break his arms. … He said, 'We'll do it in two or three years if you want it done, but we're not going to do it today, Bernie. If we went and broke his legs today, or broke his arms, you don't think they would understand that you are the one that had it done?"

Hernandez could not be reached for comment as he was too busy hawking loogies at Kramer and cleaning blow off of his 'stache between SNY broadcasts of Mets losses.

Carbo also told ESPN's Mark Schwarz that he was on marijuana, booze and speed when he pinch-hit the home run in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series that set the table for Carlton Fisk's game-winning homer.

I need sun block even in May, lesson learned...

The combination of record high temperature and a serious lack of drinkable water in South Boston this Sunday made for a great excuse to enjoy some outdoor cocktails NOT bottled in the Boston area. I decided on the Seaport area in hopes that a nice breeze off the water would relieve some of the agony I was feeling from the massive sunburn on my back. There are a couple options in the area but we went with the Atlantic Beer Garden.

ABG is a fairly new place and they definitely take advantage of their location with ample outdoor seating. They have a back deck right over the water that has limited seating and fills up early, as well as a rooftop patio with ample room. The deck was full and you can’t order food to the roof (although our waitress said they may be changing that) so we sat out in the front patio. The views are limited out there but they had a couple big umbrellas’ set up which with my sun burn was a welcomed sight.

It was our server's first day which I learned when I ordered the French Dip sandwich and she looked at me like I was from Mars, but we had a pretty large group and overall she handled it like a champ. Due to the water munsoning they had no water at the bar but despite that set-back the meal was great and the drinks were plenty cold thanks to store-bought ice. If you’re a fan of a little extra kick in your Bloody Mary, they make an exceptional one. While the seating out front wasn’t ideal the meal and atmosphere was good and I give the front patio a definite passing grade. Stay tuned for a future rundown of the roof deck patio at the ABG…
