Dark and Stormy

The weather in the Hub lately has been a bit dark and somewhat stormy and it has made me crave a Dark and Stormy booze drink. Dark and Stormie's remind me of the maritime and good vibes and given the pressure system that has come into the area lately with the high seas, this ginger-flavored elixir seems like the perfect complement to this weather (which I really don't mind.)

The traditional recipe for the Dark and Stormy is simple:

-2 ounces dark rum
-3 ounces ginger beer
-1/2 ounce lime juice

Us at TCD encourage you to experiment with varying levels of rum and ginger beer

The folks at Esquire.com did some great research and discovered that the Dark and Stormy originated on the isle of Bermuda and can be traced back to Andrew Marvel's time (English poet, 1621-1678)* who wrote,

Where the remote Bermudas ride In th' Ocean's bosom unespied, From a small boat that rowed along, The listening winds received this song: "What should we do but sing His praise, That led us through the watery maze, Unto an isle so long unknown, And yet far kinder than our own; That gave us this eternal spring Which here enamels every thing, And poured us healthy tots of rum, With ginger-beer made frolicsome?

Great prose but it doesn't really give much history on the drink, however it does tell us that the British were onto something magical. During the 1800's, the daily ration of rum in the British Royal Navy was 2 oz., and somewhere between 1860 and 1920 the British added a ginger beer bottling plant to one of their dockyards in Ireland (not really sure why), and some genius mixed the dark rum with the ginger beer and created a masterpiece.

So go out and enjoy one of these delicious concoctions; we may be heading into hurricane season soon enough so be sure to stock the galley with plenty of Goslings and ginger beer. Cheers.

*I've actually heard of this dude, I was an English major, hard to believe, I know
