I went to Bowdoin College. Many staffers on TCD went to Bowdoin College and though many outside of the northeast (and inside) have never heard of the school, I can assure you that it's a heck of a place.
Anyway, that's not the point of this post. The point is to state a fact: Bowdoin's football team SUCKS. I'm not sure it's ever been that good and even in the years when it has been good, it's good in a weak DIII conference. I don't want to hate on the team too much, but I can honestly say that you can count the number of football games I attended while a student on one hand.
Why do I bring this up? Because I wish this wasn't the case and when I read the story of the 117-year rivalry between Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon, I got instantly jealous. These two teams, both DIII small schools - not unlike Bowdoin - go at it each year like it's the freaking Rose Bowl. There's even a digital clock in the Randolph-Macon athletic offices that counts down the YEAR prior to the game.
Coaches on both sides agree that even in a 1-9 year, beating the other makes it a good season.
As a football fan and more importantly, as a fan of loose hanging out and good times, I'm jealous. I can only imagine what college Saturdays would have been like if even once a year Bowdoin had a rivalry like this. Instead, we'd lose to Colby in what was widely considered to be the worst game in NCAA college football.
