"Now baaatting, fursst baseman, numbah twenty far, Teen-oh Maar-teen-nez, numbah twenty far."
Bob Sheppard's intro of Tino Martinez was probably his most famous delivery for my generation of Yankee fans. D Rock (that would be Mr. Jeter) still uses Sheppard's recorded voice for his introduction and I imagine he will continue to for the rest of his career. Sheppard - an absolute legend to three generations of Yankee and New York Football Giants fans in my family, in this city, country and maybe world (?) - passed away Sunday at the tender age of 99 at his home in Baldwin, NY.
The first game Sheppard announced was Joe D's last Opening Day and Mickey Mantle's first. He was the PA for the Giants as well. Sheppard called more Giants games late in his career to save his voice, but still called the occasional Yankee gam thoughout the 2000s. Once I went to a Yankees-Indians playoff game and then to a Giants-Colts Meadowlands opener and Sheppard called both. I drank to that. He will be missed.
RIP BOB SHEPPARD
